When You Miss the Mark — Leading Through Disappointment

Some years don’t go the way we planned. Targets are missed, deals fall through, margins tighten—and the weight of it all lands on your shoulders as a leader. But missing the mark doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It often means you’re being refined.

Leadership maturity is revealed when outcomes disappoint. Philippians 3:13–14 offers wisdom for these moments: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me.”

Here’s how to lead through disappointment with grace:

  1. Acknowledge reality. Don’t spin or sugarcoat the truth—your team will respect your honesty and humility.

  2. Shift the lens. Ask, “What can we learn? What are the adjustments needed for next year?”

  3. Model resilience. When you stay steady and hopeful, your people find courage in your posture.

Every setback carries a seed of growth. Missing a quota can expose what needs clarity, alignment, or renewal. Use it as an opportunity to refocus—not to retreat.
